Sweet chestnut

Description: A tree that can attain a height of up to 30 m. Leaves up to 10-25 cm long, elliptic, elongated, boldly toothed (lanceolate). Male flowers in groups form a cupule, while female flowers form three or more. It produces 1-3 fruits per cupule, enveloped by a thorny dome.

Distribution in Kosovo: Broadly distributed in the hilly zone of Dukagjin from Morine to Rugova Gorge.

Parts used: Leaves (Castanea folium) and the fruit are used for food or for making cake cream.

Harvest time: Leaves are harvested during early summer (June)

Drying:  is done in the oven at temperatures up to 500C or in places that have good air circulation. Ratio: 6: 1.

Therapeutic category Use(s): the leaves are traditionally used to treat diarrhoea and for relieving cough and asthma. : Astringent, expectorant, styptic.

Preparation and dosage: 2-4 g of chopped dried leaves are put in a cup of boiling water and left to rest for 10 minutes.
